Tucumcari, NM to Dalhart, TX 96 miles

Today was the second back to back century rides. According to the UMCA the official distance for a century is 90 miles. Hmmmm...go figure. Anyway this keeps any of our riders from riding around in the parking lot for 7 minutes while they reach 100 miles. So the powers that be call 90 miles a century. Maybe 100 miles is a CENTURY.

On this day we cruised into God's country-Texas. We have 3 native Texans on our tour and a few North Carolinians. We almost count them as Texans. New Yorkers need not apply. LOL. All through the day the terrain became flatter and less rolling until about 15 miles outside of Dalhart where the terrain became very flat. We knew we were in Texas when we smelled money. Some of the riders were confused and instead thought it was diesel fuel or manure.

It was a good weather day although the wind shifted in the afternoon to E/SSE which really didn't help but hindered instead. Everyone is pretty tired and the hotel is not to be confused with the Ritz Carlton South Beach. I think the hotel here doesn't have the sushi on the Sunday breakfast buffet. This is probably the poorest of the hotels thus far, but in Dalhart you get what you get. And the gettin ain't that good as we say.

We did see real Cowboys today. LOL And in these parts they aren't called Cowboy boots, just boots. Lots of cattle although a lot of them are in the feedlots being fattened up prior to ending up on the dinner table. The road in was in good shape but a bit rough as the Texans use a larger gravel size. Everything here is bigger. Well almost everything.

Everyone is a bit tired today and we changed over to Central Standard Time. Being a true lean manufacturing expert, I saved a step by never having set my watch to Mountain Standard Time.
I am a little tired myself....that and I am now drinking a beer listening to route rap (is it root or rout? still working on that one).

Houston the Eagle has landed.

  1. Sounds like the ride is going great...my guess is Dalhart might not be on your list of top 100 vacation spots☺.

Keep spinning, I love reading the posts.

  2. Our group pedaled past the motel last year and went two miles past the motel and then two miles back to the hotel to get to 100. A century is 100 miles !!!
